Lighting

These photos are both by Annie Leibovitz and are of Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman for the movie Australia.
Lighting means the way the photographer uses light to highlight and use in the compositions of their photographs. There are different types of lighting you can use to create the effect you like, you can use natural light or artifical lights.

These pictures are taken outside and the photographer has used natural light in both pictures. In the first picture, it is more a close up of Nicole Kidman on the horse, but the light is coming through the trees in the background, highlighting the area around her face and also creating a reflection in the water. In the second picture the light is featured more as it takes up the whole background of the picture. The light is brightest in the middle of the photograph around where the people are standing, and blends in as it gets closer to the ground and also is darker at the top corners of the picture where the clouds are nearer. The branches of the tree have turned into a silhouette because of the way the sun is positioned behind them. I like both these pictures because like most of Annie Leibovitz work they have a really magical feel to them, like with the forest in the first photograph adds so much more depth into the picture and the branch of the tree in the second photograph is really interesting, both pictures have really detailed backgrounds if you look closely and away from the main focal point- the people.
